I see that you've acquired a rare, handmade, magical rune from Moonlit Oak. Congrats!

So, what would you like to know first?

You may have known or heard about the Elder Futhark runes through their association with the Vikings. It's one of the oldest known runic alphabet, made up of 24 symbols, and used by Germanic peoples in the 2nd-8th centuries. They use it for writing casual notes and love letters, marking their stuff (e.g. weapons, tools, chests), and recording trades.

Unlike our alphabets though, runes mean so much more to the Vikings than just daily uses.

In Norse culture, runes were believed to be shapers of reality, woven into the fabric of the universe.

*According to the famous Old Norse poem Hávamál, Odin sacrificed himself by hanging from the world tree, Yggdrasil, for 9 days and nights, pierced by his own spear, just to peer downward and grasp the secrets of the runes.Because they were won through divine suffering, using them was considered an act of channeling raw cosmic power!

But enough history lessons for today.

The real question is, which one is yours? And what does it mean? Click the image below to find out more about each rune!

Also you might be thinking: "If Elder Futhark contains 24 runes, why does the Moonlit Oak collection features only 12 of them?"These twelve were specifically curated to represent a journey through themes of strength, wisdom, protection, connection, growth, change, and new beginnings.Think of them as the first twelve artifacts in the Moonlit Oak archive. The other twelve are still waiting in the dark.Follow us on the socials below if you're interested for the second volume! ^^

How to awaken a rune's imbued magic?

In Norse tradition, runes could be more than marks on a surface. They could be carved, colored, spoken, and carried — turning words and symbols into objects of intention.Your rune has already been carved and colored by hand by our runemasters. Now, you give it your voice.

  1. SPEAK ITS INVOCATION — Hold your rune and say its invocation aloud. Check your rune invocations here.

  2. CARRY IT WITH YOU — Attach it to your bag, keys, water bottle, on your person as a bracelet or necklace, or wherever you'll see it often. Let its purpose remain close.

  3. TREAT IT WITH RESPECT — A magical object is only as magical as the intention and meanings you give it. Find out more about rune care here, and treat it as a companion, not merely an accessory.

  4. AWAKEN ITS GLOW — Expose it to a bright light for a few minutes, then take it somewhere dark*. Watch its markings come alive.

*Note that we use phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark paint for the markings, which means that it needs to be exposed to a bright light as a way to "charge" it.

Carved. Colored. Spoken. Carried.

Your part begins now.

⚠️ A NOTE ON MISUSEIn Norse tradition, magic could be used for protection and blessing — but also for harm and curses. Tales of níð, curse magic, and magical retaliation often carry a warning: what you put into the world may come back upon you.Keep your rune focused on your own path. This means focus on your own growth, protection, courage, abundance, or success.Don't use it to diminish another person.

How to take care of your rune?

CARRY IT WITH YOU
Runes were carved upon objects meant to be carried, worn, and kept close. Let yours accompany you on your own path—on your bag, your keys, your water bottle, or wherever feels right.
KEEP IT DRY & CLEAN
Your rune is sealed with protective varnish to help guard its painted surface during everyday use. Still, it is made from air-dry clay. That means:

  1. Keep it away from prolonged water and soaking.

  2. Keep it away from harsh chemicals.

  3. If it gathers dust, gently wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.

TREAT IT WITH RESPECT
A rune could carry a name, a message, a protection, or an intention. Keep yours somewhere meaningful when you are not carrying it.
A rune's magic is strengthened by the meaning we give it; leave it forgotten for too long, and its magic may grow faint.BUILT TO BE CARRIED — NOT TO BE BATTLED
Your rune is sealed for everyday wear, but it is still a handmade clay artifact beneath the varnish. Normal handling is perfectly fine. Dropping it from a height, bending it, crushing it, or deliberately testing its strength may damage it.
Carry it boldly. Care for it gently.
Let it become part of your journey.
